AB 846 authorizes a voluntary process for local agencies to submit wildfire preparedness plans that minimize impacts to surrounding wildlife and habitats.

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Assemblymember Damon Connolly (D-San Rafael) introduced AB 846, which will provide local agencies with a voluntary, streamlined process that prioritizes wildfire preparedness activities and public safety while upholding environmental laws and permitting authorities.

“As our state continues to face the growing threat of wildfire, we must take action to ensure that we continue to improve and enhance our preparedness efforts,” said Assemblymember Connolly. “AB 846 will help our communities prepare for wildfire while ensuring that we continue to steward our endangered wildlife and habitats.”

“The devastating wildfires in Southern California further underscore the need for the state to act quickly to accelerate wildfire preparedness efforts,” said League of California Cities Executive Director and CEO Carolyn Coleman. “Cal Cities is proud to sponsor AB 846, which will help us keep our residents and businesses safe by streamlining and enhancing our ability to reduce the growing threat of wildfires in and around our communities.”

AB 846 will develop a voluntary, streamlined process for local agencies to submit wildfire preparedness programs to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. This bill will help avoid and mitigate the disruption of endangered, threatened, or candidate species and habitats, while allowing vegetative management activities that mitigate risk in fire hazard severity zones near communities. This legislation will provide an avenue to safeguard our communities against wildfire while protecting our local wildlife and habitats.
