SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Damon Connolly’s (D-San Rafael) bill that strengthens the Safer from Wildfire Program’s regulations has been signed into law by the Governor. AB 1 will ensure consumers who responsibly harden their homes against wildfires receive the largest cost-reducing benefit. Additionally, by periodically revisiting the regulations, AB 1 ensures that new wildfire prevention methods are taken into account, while offering relief.
“I am extremely proud to have authored AB 1, in partnership with Insurance Commissioner Lara, which now provides necessary relief to consumers’ insurance bills while mitigating wildfire risk," said Assemblymember Connolly. “Now that AB 1 has become law, more Californians will benefit from the Safer from Wildfires program, and our communities will have assistance in hardening their homes against wildfires.”
This essential measure was signed in conjunction with a bipartisan package of insurance bills, which was announced by Governor Newsom in a release today. AB 1 not only provides support to communities most vulnerable to wildfires but also relieves consumers from increasingly high insurance rates. In recent years, California has witnessed some of the most destructive fires, and it is imperative that California offers cost-reducing benefits to community members who harden their homes and mitigate wildfire risks. This bill was sponsored by Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and was supported throughout the legislative process by a broad coalition of counties, environmental groups, and industry associations across California.
